Gender and The North: A new essay by historian Helen Smith

North is a project exploring the various ways the North of England has been portrayed and stereotyped in media and fashion, pondering whether the place where someone has grown up influences their aesthetic.

The next instalment in the series is an essay by Helen Smith, a lecturer in Twentieth Century British History at the University of Lincoln who specialises in histories of sexuality, gender, region and class. The piece draws on research for Smith's book, Masculinity, Class and Same-Sex Desire in Industrial England, 1895-1957, and explores how cultural, social and economic elements influence gender identity within the North.
