About

In Autumn 2015, Veuve Clicquot announced plans for The Widow Series, a new initiative that will see the brand enlist a different creative partner each October to create a bespoke Halloween experience as an ode to the famous widow, Madame Clicquot. For the debut event, the champagne doyens called on Nick Knight and SHOWstudio to mastermind proceedings and produce newly-commissioned, never-before-seen work.

Dubbed A Beautiful Darkness, Knight’s event will feature painting, sculpture, music, film, performance, illustrations, scent art and dance. Contributing fine artists include Anj Smith, Scott Campbell, Henry Krokatsis and Anthony James. Additionally fashion designers Thom Browne and Gareth Pugh will dress models and dancers at the event in a suitably macabre, mournful fashion. Amongst many other one-off installations, taxidermist Rose Robson will create her signature impossible forms out of dead birds, while Lady Amanda Harlech will curate a space inspired by her interest in witches.

The event’s home is the former Central Saint Martins College building in Holborn, a space that was once alive with creative energy and passion. Knight aims to bring that mood back to the space, awakening the senses through a variety of immersive installations. Continuing our commitment to broadcasting live from fashion’s most exciting spaces, be that designers’ studios or fashion week’s runways, the opening event, to be held on 28 October 2015, and subsequent public exhibition will be open to online viewers through an interactive social media feed. If you’re in London and attending the event use #TheWidowSeries to allow worldwide viewers to follow your adventures and enjoy the artworks.

In keeping with SHOWstudio’s founding principal, at the centre of the show are five newly commissioned fashion films on the theme of horror. Knight recruited both upcoming and established talents within the genre to work on these pieces, from Rei Nadal and Ruth Hogben to Vash and BESSNYC4. After the event, the films will be available to view exclusively on SHOWstudio. Knight also continues his commitment to fashion illustration, commissioning twenty-two one-off artworks from SHOWstudio’s diverse community of artists. The works depict key looks from the S/S 16 collections, as chosen by SHOWstudio contributor Ellie Grace Cumming. Paying homage to the theme, the artworks offer a beautifully macabre vision of the collections and include depictions of the Givenchy S/S 16 show by Unskilled Worker and Rodarte S/S 16 by Laura Laine.

‘I have curated the show to stimulate all of our senses; sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, and also our sense of the paranormal. The show contains painting, sculpture, music, film, performance, illustrator, scent art and dance. At the centre of the show are five newly commissioned fashion films on the theme of horror. Fashion film is the medium we pioneer and champion at SHOWstudio, and these works will show off the talent of some of this genre’s most creative practitioners,’ explains Knight.

For those not able to attend the event, and in keeping with our passion for offering downloadable treats to our viewers - from posters to dress patterns, as seen in our Design Download series  - SHOWstudio called on make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench to offer a bit of Halloween magic for free. Download her bespoke masks for the perfect spooky look. Send us pictures of you with wearing them in full costume to mask@showstudio.com. The best versions will go on display in our Submissions Gallery.
