To celebrate the arrival of the Savage Beauty exhibition in London at the V&A, AnOther magazine sought to pay tribute to the late Lee Alexander McQueen with three unique covers celebrating the past, present and future of the McQueen brand. To celebrate the earliest years of McQueen's work - the London years - two of the late designer's closest collaborators and dearest friends, stylist Katy England and imagemaker and SHOWstudio founder Nick Knight, unite. The resultant editorial features fashion created between 1994 and 2001 and not only celebrates McQueen's tailoring prowess and darkly beautiful vision, but his aesthetic obsessions, interests and background.
'We'd intended just to shoot against a grey backdrop, with no props, as Lee's work is so full of narrative you don't need any more than the clothes, explains Knight. 'But then we got to the studios and one was being redeveloped so all the paint was stripped back and the plaster was visible - it looked somewhere between nothing and a beautiful Florentine chapel. I felt Lee would have like that - he loved religious buildings - so we shot in front of that instead.' Several shots were also captured in the stark, suburban streets surrounding the studio - a nod to McQueen's East London roots and the impact his youth in London, a feral existence spent sat on roof tops looking at birds and charging around run-down streets, had on his work.
New face Stella Lucia shines in the editorial. Her ability to combine strength and fragility, and femininity with otherworldliness, won her the cover. She appears decorated with vicious Shaun Leane jewellery - true Savage Beauty.
Admire the editorial and stay tuned for films that will show off each outfit in movement and give further details about their provenience through audio commentary from McQueen's friend and collaborator, fashion journalist Susannah Frankel.
