About
SHOWstudio’s 2018 Queer project is an open, interrogative and creative exploration of the term. Celebrating communities that align with contemporary notions of queerness and fashion that emerges thus, this project seeks to examine the ways that the A/W 18 collections explored, appropriated and questioned this term.
Opening the project, non-binary fashion collective ART SCHOOL host a LiveStudio, taking place 1-2 May 2018. The LiveStudio is presented via a 2-day Live Stream, working closely with the ART SCHOOL community and showing the entire process behind ART SCHOOL's unique designs and creative work. Artist Dominic Myatt collaborates on the LiveStudio and takes over the SHOWstudio Tumblr from 1-7 May, exploring his perfectly subversive and perverse world.
A series of essays continues SHOWstudio's tradition of pioneering investigative journalism and critical thinking. Inspired and influenced by the A/W 18 collections, our writers explore a wide variety of topics including post-human fashion, the role of sportswear in homosexuality and body conformity.
London-based collective BBZ takes over the Tumblr for June, using imagery to prioritise the experiences of queer women, trans and non-binary people of colour.
Jazzelle, aka @uglyworldwide, started her career having been found on Instagram by Nick Knight. In this celebration of identity, we Live Stream Jazzelle exploring character and unique beauty using the A/W 18 collections.
The verb form of the word queer, 'Queering' looks for places where gender, sexuality, masculinity and femininity can be challenged and questioned. In our immersive live stream, 12 and 13 July, a variety of contributors and creatives use their art, talent and physicality to both show and tell us what the term means to them.
Unique to the Queer project, the 'Safe Spaces' interviews see Charles Jeffrey, Michéle Lamy, Ashish Gupta and Florian Hetz discuss the concepts. Further unravelling the idea of a 'safe space' Mimma Viglezio, Lara Johnson-Wheeler and Georgina Evans conducted the interviews in locations chosen by the subjects themselves.
To conclude the project, SHOWstudio invited a selection of panellists to unpack the term queer. Offering their personal understandings, the eclectic set of guests comprehensively dissect the politics and power of queer culture in fashion and the wider sphere.
